Behind the scenes of my Hollywood novels

Gossip Column : a Hollywood novel

During Hollywood’s Golden Years, the stars of the era lived in fear of two all-powerful gossip columnists, Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons. Many a career was ruined as the pair attacked them with their poison pens. I began to wonder what would happen if a rookie reporter tried to usurp their position and power and how those in her firing line would fare. That’s how my novel Gossip Column was born. I peopled it with imaginary young stars whose only hope to avoid ruin was to outwit their seemingly invincible opponents.

Ashley’s Rainbow

What would it be like being the daughter of one of Hollywood’s most famous stars in the 1940s? A star who is selfish and self-centered and expects everyone around her to behave like adoring fans every moment of the day and night. This is one of the questions that played on my mind and propelled me into writing Ashley’s Rainbow. In the novel I explore the relationship between mother and daughter as Ashley Dann battles to live her life on her own terms.

  1. Hi, Pat. I enjoy historical fiction in general and yours in particular. I was struck when reading Talk of the Town for WomanScapes that your dialogue always seems to ring true for your time period. Is that the result of lots of research of does it simply come from immersing yourself in movies and magazines from the era?

  2. Thanks, EJ, that’s good to hear. I guess it must come from those old movies and the movie mags.
